I'm only just starting to use the gouache in my supplies and I didn't know that it could be used as a resist! I grew up doing pysanky, Ukrainian Easter eggs, and the best part is the final step when you get to wipe off the wax and see how it turned out. The suspense is wonderful and this style of painting felt the same way!
I'm not used to working with such dark and uniform color but it was a nice change to not worry about erasing pencil lines.
Okay, this step is genuinely terrifying so at least it's over quickly.
I actually have really horrible water pressure in my apartment everywhere except the washroom sink so I'll be confined to doing small pieces using this technique.
