The National Mall and specifically the Lincoln Memorial is one of my favorite places in D.C. There are always people about taking in the views of the Washington Monument and the Capitol framed by giant pillars, standing in awe of the timeless and larger than life figure of Lincoln but also lounging with friends, watching the sunset, reading, studying, biking or jogging through the area. Large groups of tourists sit along the steps and kids slide down the marble rail along the side. But just a few hundred yards away the view changes subletly and giant tour groups, bicyclists, readers and revelers give way to lowered voices, reflection and introspection.
