Reality's Mirage

Step 1: Selecting Your Text

I chose to read John Steinbeck's Pastures of Heaven because I really feel as though I resonate with his values, beliefs, social perception and sympathetic humor.  The story I was most drawn to in the book is that of Edward "Shark" Wicks, a man who is infinitely chasing happiness through a web of his own delusional and dark perceptions, fueled purely by his ego.  Shark has created a reality for his family that rests on the foundation of False Evidence Appearing Real or more commonly known as FEAR. This false reality paralyzes the family relationships from coexisting in a natural, healthy way, while also attracting the darkness Shark is so desperately fixated on escaping from.

I am most inspired by the gushing worship and ill focused fear of safety the Wickses have for their beautiful, yet very stupid daughter.  Driven by their own dysfunctional needs, Alice's restrictive parents are creating a false reality for their daughter that leaves her dependent on them and completely clueless about becoming a strong and independent young woman.

I chose this text because I can relate to the parental strongholds Alice is so anxiously trying to escape.  I am fascinated with the power of the human mind and wanted to portray our ability to create the reality we so desire with our thoughts and actions, whether it be a bright reality or a dark reality.  It really is all in the eye of the beholder!   Staying true to the story, I chose to give Alice's character a radiant twist, reflecting that she does not resonate on any level with her severely negative and deranged parents.

Step 2: Drafting Your Screenplay

Final Draft

Based on the feedback I received, I have made a few minor adjustments eliminating unneeded text explanations.
