R is for Rowling - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

I chose Harry Potter because my little boy is reading it on his own for the first time and so we're all Harry Potter all the time around here.

So here's basically the thoughts process, from concepts through to sketches and finally to the final dropcap book cover.

I also sketched a version with the R wrapped in devil's snare vines, which would have been so cool, but in the end I decided it wasn't recognizable enough. It would look great but it wouldn't conjure up Harry Potter the way the brooms or the golden snitch or the lightning bolts would.

I settled on an adaptation of the second sketch above. I went with a more traditional serif-y style R and a bronzy-gold, white, and black color palette because even though it's a more recent publication, I wanted to convey its classicness and timelessness.

I'd love to know what you guys think.
