Prosper: Crafting for a Cause

Prosper is a social enterprise I am working on with a former work colleague. We're social workers who have spent a lot of time at Rikers Island. You can check out some of the work we've been involved in there at http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/12/17/celebrating-the-holidays-behind-bars/. Proceeds from Prosper products are used to fund services for women returning from jail and prison. The services we focus on are shelter and finances -- jobs for some and wages for others, including wages to produce Prosper products!

Flyer from a past Rikers event, and the sign for the women's bathroom ...

Quilt blocks from a quilting project at "Rosie", NYC's women's jail ...

Mass Incarceration: The Mint Monster ...

Locking people up turns out to be as American as apple pie. The United States has the highest rate of incarceration in the world.
