Power Rat

Power Rat is a webcomic/comic idea I'm starting to work on.       

Here's my simplest story structure layout of Power Rat:

Once upon a time...There was a giant super-powered, sentient rat and a magically-powered DJ/producer/podcaster sitting at a table with a mic and a laptop on it, recording a podcast.  The rat is reminiscing about where he grew up when he was just a rat pup.  He lived with his mother and siblings inside the walls of a house in The City (San Francisco).  

And every day...He and his siblings would raid the house's pantry for food.

Until one day...The house the young rat lived in caught on fire.  The young rat was the only member of his family to escape the fire.  He jumped out a window and ran away from the house, making his way across the street and into The City's marina.

And because of this...The young rat catches the scent of cheese, and is drawn onto one of the marina's docks.  His nose leads him to a white disc with red markings on the side.  It is a SlidingTech Frictionless Rat Trap.  The young rat, eager to reach the cheese sitting in the center of the disc, scampers on to it, becoming trapped by the device.  The young rat gets to eat the cheese though, he says it's the best cheese he's ever tasted.

And because of this...The young rat is taken to a dark and dirty warehouse by The Red Rat, an overweight man in a red-colored mascot-style rat costume.  The Red Rat plans to turn the young rat into a villainous sidekick by instilling the young rat with enhanced size, strength, intelligence, and combat skills.  The Red Rat uses various Ultra-Science devices (all with SlidingTech logos on the sides)  to enhance the young rat.

Until finally...The Electric Slide and his henchmen smash through the warehouse's skylight, to confront The Red Rat who had stolen the SlidingTech equipment.  In the commotion the now 3'7", sentient, English-speaking rat with electrically conductive hands tries to use the distraction to escape from the warehouse.  As The Electric Slide is berating The Red Rat for the theft, he notices the giant rat heading for the door.  The Electric Slide's train of thought is completely derailed, and he instantly shifts into "CATCH THAT RAT!!!" mode.  The giant rat is able to escape the building, but runs right into the crosshairs of a S.Ph.A.M. (Society for Posthumans And Mutates) team who had tracked the villainous Electric Slide to the warehouse.  The S.Ph.A.M. team arrests both the giant rat and The Electric Slide.  S.Ph.A.M. decides that the giant rat could be a useful ally in the fight against evil and destructive Posthumans and Mutates.

Ever since that day...He has been known as Power Rat.  He is the inaugural member of S.Ph.A.M.'s Superpowered Beings Division.  He uses his super abilities to aid S.Ph.A.M. in protecting The City, The United States, and The World from posthumans, mutates, wizardry, the undead, and more.

Page 1 (one panel)

Page 1 is one full-page panel.

Panel 1.

Interior - DJ Whitebeard’s Bernal Heights House/Studio - Long shot of DJ Whitebeard and Power Rat seated at a table.  DJ Whitebeard is seated in a simple, but expensive looking chair on the left side of the panel, Power Rat is seated in a matching chair, with the aid of 2 or 3 large books (NOT PHONEBOOKS, who has phonebooks these days anyways?).  

Behind the two, a large window looks out over downtown San Francisco (The City) as seen from Bernal Heights at night.  

DJ Whitebeard is African American, 6’5”, very thin, but fit.  His most prominent feature is his white, waist-length white beard.  The hair on his head is also white, but is buzzed very short.  He has thick, black-rimmed glasses on.  He is gesturing with his hands excitedly, and his hands glow with purple and blue light.  He is dressed in an Orlando Magic jersey circa 1997 and dark-blue skinny jeans.  He’s wearing immaculate blue and white 1989 Reebok Pumps.  

Power Rat is a 3’7” sentient rat.  Power Rat is a “blazed” rat, meaning the fur on his head is black, but with a spot of white around his nose/muzzle.  Power Rat’s costume is black pants, a purple short-sleeve top, with “PR” emblazoned on the chest in gold.  The bottom arms of the “P” and “R” should end in lightning bolts.  He also has a matching purple cape with the gold “PR” logo.  On his wrists are what appear to be thick bracelets.  Small bolts of electricity arc from the bracelets.

A laptop sits on the table, and a large podcasting microphone floats in the air between DJ Whitebeard and Power Rat.  Next to the laptop is a long Gandalf-style glass pipe, a grinder, a blue-with-white-stars bic-style lighter and a bag of weed.  The microphone gives off a purple and blue glow that matches the glow coming off DJ Whitebeard’s hands.

Welcome to Episode 114 of the DJ Whitebeard Magical Hour Podcast.  I am your host, the one, the only, DJ Whitebeard.  With me today is a very special guest.  He is S.Ph.A.M.’s newest Superhero in the fight against violent and dangerous Posthumans and Mutates.  He lives right here in The City and he’s about to light up the night, baby.  Today’s guest is: Power Rat!

S.Ph.A.M. just introduced you to The City at the beginning of the week.  How does it feel to have been inducted into the ranks of The City’s Posthuman and Mutate defenders?

The first six months of my life was the best time I can remember.  My siblings and I would explore the walls of the home our mother had found for us.

We were well fed, and grew large and strong.

Panel 4.

CAP/POWER RAT:

Until the night the fire came for us.

Panel 5.

Interior - Rat's Den - Brighter lit view down the crawlspace in the lath and plaster wall.  The 5 rats are running down the crawlspace towards the reader, fire crawling up the passageway behind them.  The "blazed” rat is closest to the reader.

RATS:

Eeeeeech!  Eek!  Skreeeeek!

Leaping from the windowsill, I landed on the branch of the small tree outside the window.

Page 6 is divided in half vertically.  Panels 1-3 take up equal 1/3rds of the left half of the page.  Panels 4 & 5 take up equal halves of the right half of the page.  

Panels 1-3.
Exterior - Marina District Home - Panels 1-3 are made up of one half-page panel showing the trunk of the tree from Page 3.  In each panel, Power Rat has climbed farther down the trunk of the tree, until reaching the ground in panel 3.  The Fire Engine siren SFX-visuals get louder (bigger) in each panel.  Panel 3 is lit by the flashing red and blue lights from the Fire Engines that have pulled up at the house.

Panel 4.

Exterior - Marina District Home - Mid distance POV facing the street, which is now full of Fire Engines with Firefighters starting to jump down and get to work.  Fire Engine SFX-visuals still present.  The panel is lit by moonlight, the house on fire, and the lights from the fire trucks.

CAP/POWER RAT:

Fire Engines were pulling to a halt in front of the house.  I could hear them yelling orders.

FIREFIGHTER 1:

Dispatch said the family is trapped inside, get in there and get them out!

FIREFIGHTER 2:

Aye sir!

Panel 5.

I made my way to the gutter and ran along the roadway.  All I cared about was getting as far away from the fire as I could.

With traffic stopped because of the Fire Engines, I was able to run across the street without having to dodge cars.

Suddenly the sharp scent of cheese made my nostrils flare.

CAP/POWER RAT:

I followed my nose down a ramp towards one of the marina’s docks.  The unmistakable smell of sharp cheddar cut through the smell of the salty Bay water.

Panel 3.

Exterior - Marina Dock - Mid distance rat’s eye view of a block of cheddar cheese sitting on top of a circular metallic plate approximately 2 feet in diameter and 1/2 inch thick.  The edges are curved in a rounded bullnose that connects to the flat top.  On the top of the plate there is a circular inner section over most of the plate’s area.  There are some words written on the bullnose edge, but they can’t quite be read from this point of view.

CAP/POWER RAT:

Next to a storage locker, I found a small block of cheese sitting in the center of a circular metal plate.

Panel 4.

When I stepped on the center of the plate to eat the cheese, the center panel of the plate depressed slightly.

Excellent!  A perfect specimen.  Now my experiments can begin!  Soon, I will rule The City.  Then the world!

Panel 3.

Interior - Dark Warehouse - In the foreground, Power Rat can be seen in a cage on a table.  There is strange looking scientific equipment on the table.  In the background, a single light bulb hangs from the ceiling.  Dingy windows in the far wall let in only a tiny bit of light.  The shadowy human figure from panel 2 can be seen moving towards the cage, towards the reader.

CAP/POWER RAT:

When I woke up, I was inside a cage in a dimly lit warehouse.

The Electric Slide has insulted me for the last time!  I am through simply being one of his lowly henchmen.  I am twice the villain he will ever be!  Once my experiments are complete, he will have to face the wrath of...

Page 11 is one full-page panels.

Panel 1.

Interior - Dark Warehouse - The shadowy figure from Page 9 has stepped into the light thrown by the room’s single bulb.  He is an overweight, slovenly looking man.  He stands about 5’8” and has a short, scraggly red beard.  He is also wearing a red rat costume (see reference photo(s): Lester from Beakman’s World.jpg).  He is standing in the light, leaning back.  His fists are clenched and raised up and away from his body.  His head is thrown back, eyes and mouth wide in insane laughter and excitement.  (STUFF - reference photo of me leaning back in this pose).  The tail of his costume drags on the filthy floor behind him.  The cage and the top of Power Rat’s head can be seen at the bottom of the panel in the foreground.

I had no idea what the man in the cheap rat costume was yelling at me.  I had escaped the fire that killed my family only to wind up imprisoned in a cage with a fat man in a costume yelling at me.  This was clearly not the best night of my life.

With the SlidingTech ultra-science equipment I’ve stolen over the past months, I will give both of us the power to crush The Electric Slide!

Cut to Dirk Bulletdodger and Sam Sonar on the roof. They were smoking a J, but are now noticing the S.P.A.M. Team.

Slide, come in. Electric Slide, come in. You've got a fully-armed S.P.A.M. Team ready to break in the warehouse door. Come in, Slide!

The Mason is about to give the order to go when Power Rat comes running out of the warehouse. His hands crackling with electricity and screaming at the top of his lungs.

Cut to S.P.A.M. agents disarming and handcuffing The Electric Slide.  Headless Jack is assisting with the arrest.

S.P.A.M. TEAMSTER 2:

You have the right to remain silent.  Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.  You have the right to an attorney.  If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you.  In accordance with the Blackwell-Falor Act of 2003, as a known Posthuman and/or Mutate, you will be held in confinement by the Society for Posthumans and Mutates until your abilities and threat level have been assessed.

Cut to S.P.A.M. agents reaching to handcuff Power Rat.  Power Rat’s hands are arcing with electricity.

S.P.A.M. TEAMSTER 4:

You have the right to remain silent.  Anything you say can and will be used against...

As S.P.A.M. Teamster 4 touches Power Rat to attach the handcuffs, he is shocked and goes down as if he’d been hit by a taser as the electricity arcing around Power Rat’s hands course into him.

S.P.A.M. TEAMSTER 4:

...you in a court of laaaAAAOOOOOOWWWWW!!!

HEADLESS JACK:

HAA! HAAA! HAAA!!

Seeing S.P.A.M. Teamster 4 get shocked and drop to the ground, S.P.A.M. Teamster 1 raises his weapon at Power Rat, preparing to fire.

S.P.A.M. TEAMSTER 1:

Don’t move!

The Mason jumps into action, putting himself between S.P.A.M. Teamster 1’s weapon and Power Rat as he orders the man not to fire.   

THE MASON:

Hold your fire Sgt. Morgan!  Leave this one to The Mason!

He swiftly punches Power Rat in the jaw with a fist of stone, knocking the enourmous rodent unconscious.

Power Rat falls unconscious and the electricity arcing around his hands fizzles away.

THE MASON:

Get this one secured, then get both of them in separate vehicles.  And get a Medic to check on Villalobos.  The way he went down, looked like he got hit with a taser.  

HEADLESS JACK:

Ha! Ha! You got it, Mason!

THE MASON:

We’ve got to find out what Slide’s connection to this giant rat is.

Cut to Power Rat being placed inside a S.P.A.M. transport vehicle.  He is unconscious and tied down to a gurney.

Cut to The Electric Slide being placed into a separate S.P.A.M. transport vehicle.  The Mason is supervising him being loaded into the vehicle.

THE MASON:

I told you we’d get you, Slide.

THE ELECTRIC SLIDE:

Yeah, yeah. &nbs
