Plum Yum

So.  Here's my mood board.  I think I'm going for a darker, moodier feel with rich colors, dark background and crisp texture.  But I'm not sure what my subject food is going to be, so I'll which direction it actually goes.  As I've been sifting through pics, I've been most inspired by color.

I wanted to just grab a quick test for the cover photo with my iphone for this project.  I didn't have any veggies on hand so I just grabbed this walnut.  I like this kind of texture and it will help me think about the shape of the innards as I go hunt around the marketplace for my subject.

First Shoot:

It was a rough one.  I was in South Korea that week so I went to the market to try and find food they specifically use there that would also meet my criteria.  I picked these rad looking mushrooms that I thought would go in my earthy color tone palette and have lovely shape.

Ugh.  Things did not go so well.  The tops are very dark, and the stems very light, extremely intricate and I just could not a good light balance to convey the beauty of these guys.  So here's a few from the shoot.  They are not great. Totally lacking the emphasis on color that I was going for.  I think I'm going to try again with a different fruit/vegetable.  But for fun, here they are.

Okay.  Take 2.  Clementines.

I got inspired by the hallway at our current apartment.  We had clementines already on hand so I just went for it.  Total opposite of round one.  As bright as I could make it.  Blowing it out on white.

I'm not thrilled with the outcome, but I had a total blast shooting.  It felt like the possibilties were endless.

Okay!  So I have still not been satisfied with the capturing of color in my food photos so far.  So I tackled one more fruit.  And success!  I love the color that found in flesh of these plums.  And, I loved stuffing myself with these tasty fruits afterwards.

Go team.
