Playful Fall Dance

Playful Fall Dance - student project

I decided to go with a Fall pattern since Fall is my favourite season of the year. I wanted to focus on cool Fall nights, rich jewel tones and a lush feeling while still being playful.

I started my project with some keywords:

  • Fall
  • rich
  • darkness
  • night
  • breeze
  • wind
  • lush
  • comfort
  • cool
  • mystery
  • dense

Moodboard

My moodboard focused on nature elements such as leaves, berries and acorns. I wanted to incorporate a lot of texture such as knitted items people wear when it gets colder, twigs and veins of leaves. To evoke a lush feeling, I wanted the pattern to be dense and multi-directional, similar to when wind blows leaves on the ground in all directions. For colours, I wanted to use a dark background with muted jewel tones as a reference to nighttime, also using a variation of Pantone’s 2018 Fall colours.

Sketches

I sketched motifs that spoke to comfort such as lattes and outerwear accessories, mixed with nature elements. I tried 2 different options for background shapes such as gold leaf and brush strokes, but I decided against it because the shapes didn’t really mesh with the main objects. Instead, I used a curly vine motif that was a little more playful.

Collection Story: Playful Fall Dance

Playful Fall Dance is inspired by crisp Fall evenings and leaves that dance across the ground below. It is the contrast between warm and cool as leaves change into vivid colours, weather grows colder and sky grows darker.
