Playa del Carmen

I want to spend June and July of 2014 in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. I've found an apartment on the beach, now all I need is two free airline tickets to get me there. American Airlines flies into Cancun and I can take public transit from there.

I've already signed up for the Citi AAdvantage Platinum card with 40,000 bonus miles. I should have the bonus completed in the next 30 days and receive the miles in a few months. This will bring my total to 50,000 miles. However, I will need a total of 80,000 for two tickets.

After I complete the minimum spend for the Platinum card, I'm going to apply for the other Citi AAdvantage card that comes with 30,000 bonus miles. This should pay for my flight and allow me to start booking my trip. This would be a great Christmas present for my wife!

Watching the videos, I had an idea about reaching the minimum spend for multiple card. If you have two accounts, could you pay $1,000 from one Amazon Payments account to another? For example, I could pay $1,000 to my wife's account each month and she could pay $1,000 to mine. Since there are no fees this transfer of funds would cost us nothing. However, it would allow us to charge up to $24,000 per year on our credit cards (12 months * $1,000 * 2 accounts). The responsible thing to do would be to transfer that money into our bank accounts and use it to pay off the credit cards. This way we don't actually spend anything and we get all those miles. Should this work? If not, what am I missing?
