Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

I choose Planes, Trains, and Automobiles because what is better then ONE noun in a title but THREE.

And who doesn't love 80s Steve Martin and John Candy?

Design Process:

After re-watching the film, I decided on a few characteristics that I wanted the posters to represent:

  • motel signs
  • traveling
  • delayed flights
  • Texture
  • luggage
  • airport
  • on the go

1st poster:

The inspiration of the poster comes from the airport scene. It sets up the 1st obstacle for the main characters, indefintely delayed flights a few days before Thanksgiving.

I kept the idea simple. The main focus is the flight departure/Arrival board, emphasizing the delayed flight in red. I also tilted the letters giving a sense of movement and urgency.

2nd poster:

The inspiration for the 2nd design is the dated motels the two characters were forced to share throught the film.

This design focuses on the characters' frequent motel stops. The motels are always dated and rarely available.

3rd poster:

The last poster is based on all three vehicles of transportation.

For this poster, I vectorized hand-lettering and used a color palette that represented each vehicle. Lastly, I used a fabric texture to represent the clothing of the main characters (ie Steve Martin's suit)

Thank you for taking the time to check out my work!
