Pidgin English Co.

Hi Everyone

My name is Olu, I run a brand called Pidgin English Co.

Pidgin English Co. was created out the desire to have clothing that represented the culture and experiences of the African diaspora. From my experiences as a first generation, American culture is very important and I wanted to incorporate the duality of growing up in a Nigerian household in America. overall, I think the story of the immigrant is dynamic and a story that we can somewhat relate to and find ourselves in.

Some of the undertones themes and messaging that I try and incorporate into the brand is nautically influenced because of the reach of the African diaspora, heraldry because of the history and exchange of commerce between continents and the uniqueness of travel by sea in my option.

Below is the "about us" of the brand

Interpretations of African culture and influences expressed through garments

The Shield: While not given a choice, you have been bestowed the honor to multiply and add to the legacy of your culture. Your journey lay in the desire to never forget home but to share your culture with the world. With this comes balance, which is the culmination of your story.

The Colours: Though outwardly acknowledged, you are not defined by the simplicity of the human race. Birthed from pride, you carry the torch. Your job is to embrace and transcend the affairs that distract the world. Lead those to a new land.

The Charge: The heart of a lion. The forefront of your pride, you recognize the animalistic nature of the terrain. You maneuver through the world to exchange a piece of yourself and share your greatest gift, your experiences.

“Pidgin English is the lingua franca, or language of commerce, spoken along the West African coast during the period of the Atlantic slave trade. British slave merchants and local African traders developed this language in the coastal areas in order to facilitate their commercial exchanges”. Pidgin English is now used among many African and Caribbean nations as a native form of communication.

I wanted to create new "Shields" / Crests for the African nation that are in this year's world cup. Some say the world cup is like a world war just without the guns and most European football logos have some type of heraldry incorporated into its design. I took these reference points and researched the history of shields and applied my knowledge to design a new shield for all the African Nation but below I'm presenting Egypt.

Egypt has a long history of shields and I went with a shield shape used for the goddess Neith. if spears were included they would be pointing down. I didn't want to overcomplicate the design so I used the current eagle on the Egyptian flag and then added layers to the bottom to represent the many layers of Egyptian history. which you will see below
