There's so much room for experimentation... I decided to start posting what I've done until now, even if initially I wanted to wait to put my pattern on some mokups before publishing my project.
So here's some of the experiments:
I started with an only vector shape:
and obtained different pattern just by changing the pattern settings:
as you can see I have some issues: there are lines that appear in my patterns and I don't know why or what to do about it!
I then tried with the same shape, but repeated and modified, and I started to apply color too:
Then I tried with another shape, this time a raster image:
while copying the shape from photoshop to illustrator, I couldn't obtain only the shape, I would get a white background too, even if I didn't have a background in photoshop. I solved this by saving my photoshop element as png and then I used the png in illustrator.
I tried both keeping the image 'solid' and making it transparent:
