Patterns and Pattern Brushes with Procreate

Patterns and Pattern Brushes with Procreate - student project

I got quite addicted to making patterns and almost forgot to create some pattern brushes when I was playing with pattern repeats for this project!

I started out with this puppy pattern, which I adjusted so I could experiment with the repeat as explained by Sandra:

Then went on to create this flora pattern and a spotty textured brush to add some interest to the illustrations.

I wanted to create this illustration of nostalgic Melbourne trams with a tram track pattern. I created a brush for the tram tracks which was quite challenging (it nearly drove me a bit mad, actually!)--I kept trying to create the brush using a square file with strokes either side (like an = sign) --turns out it needs to be created using dots (like the dots of a colon mark  :  ) in case anyone else ever tries to do this! I learnt a lot about the brushes trying to master this though!

Thank you Sandra, this was a lot of fun and I loved the challenge of really thinking about my illustrations in terms of patterns, and more about what textures can be used to add depth to my work. It is an area I don't pay enough attention to and I look forward to adding it to my work process with future designs.   :)
