I started by scanning two pieces of artwork and then using cut+paste in Photoshop I made squares and circles 1.5 inches wide to fit inside the book. I made a sheet in InDesign with a number of circles and squares–some with geometric patterns, some with nature designs. I printed with color printer onto Arches text wove paper. (ps some of these photos are upside-down)
After cutting these out, I began to think about arrangement, and also colors, trying out different groupings of colored papers and groupings of circles and squares.
I cut my own blossom squares from fleck-tone papers from a print-shop, to have more earth-tone colors that matched with the images of birds and branches. Then I attached the units together and laid out the circles and squares as I planned to glue them, so I didn't get confused.
I ended up making one book with squares down the center and circle-flags, and the other with circles down the center and square-flags.
I also used these earth-tone papers to wrap the covers of the books. I decided to use solid colors and not patterns on the covers because there were enough patterns inside.
I will now add a small design on each cover. or make a label that says "Pattern Play".
