Pattern Design with Bonnie

Hi everyone!

I am Fizah Malik and i am a freelance Textile/ Surface designer based in Sydney. I have been designing for quite a while but have recently started working on my signature style and getting my personal art and work out there. I have been following Bonnie on Instagram for a while and absolutely love her work and her signature style. Getting personal feedback from her is what really drawed me in to take this workshop with the added bonus of having more work in my portfolio.

Phase1:

Brain storming:

Phase 1 was all about sourcing inspiration and brainstorming. I instantly started thinking about what inspires me to create everyday and without a doubt its nature. Most of my patterns are floral based and i just love capturing the beauty of nature. I also started thinking about any inspiring places i would like to visit someday with my family. Me and my husband always talk about visiting Morroco someday. The Architecture, Intricate patterns, the colours, everything seems so magical and spellbinding.

Sourcing Inspiration:

For sourcing my personal inspiration ,I went on a walk with my camera and sketch book. I live in a beautiful suburb near a huge park and heritage listed sites with amazing rose gardens. The rose garden really struck me and i took loads of pictures with my dslr.

For the Morrocon Theme, i took some pictues from Pinterest and Google as i havent been there yet. Soon maybe :)

So i was sure about two of my collections and just kept thinking about the third collection. Luckily we took our 2year old daughter to Zoo over the weekend and it was our first time there and i am glad i had my camera with me. We explored the entire Zoo which had some amazing areas including a Rainforest trail which really inspired me and i took loads of pictures and i just knew i had material for my third collection.

The following technique i have tried for the first time in Illustrator after watching Bonnie's classes. I took some photographs and cut out motifs with Lasso tool. After that i exported them to Illustrator and used the Live trace option, limiting the colours to 5-6. I really enjoyed this process and i thought ill share it here.
