Paper-cut in Ezhou, the name card of the city

UNIT 1:

Background:

Ezhou, my hometown, is a city in Hubei Province of China.

Chinese paper-cut is on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO, and paper-cut of Ezhou is a important and famous branch of Chinese paper cut. In 2008, Ezhou Paper-cut was chosen to be on the list of intangible cultural heritage of China.

But like most of cultural heritage in China, Ezhou paper-cut is fading. Only a few paper-cutter are alive and no young people is willing to learn this craft.

Audience:

  • Aged citizens in Ezhou city who have strong city identity.
  • Young people who wants cools stuff to introduce their hometown.
  • Citizens who wants to contribute to the city's cultural heritage.
  • Collectors who are interesed in paper-cut.
  • Ezhou local government.

Pain:

  • People in Ezhou lacks cutural speciaties to introduce their hometown. Especially for colleges students who go out of their hometown, they often can't find a thing to introduce their home city.
  • The only national-level intangable cultural heritage of Ezhou city are becoming extinct, but at the same time, just a small part of people in the city knows that.
  • The economy in Ezhou is increasing but the city identity of Ezhou is decreasing since many young people left their home city and settled down in 1-tier or 2 tier cities.

Goal:

  • Creat a brand, a name card of Ezhou city for people to use: the Ezhou paper-cut.
  • Save the only intangable cutural heritage in Ezhou sustainably.
  • Built the city cultural identity among citizens, especially for young students.

Help:

  • Research on citizens cognition on Ezhou paper-cut.
  • Use social media and official media to make people aware of the paper-cut fading problem.
  • Introduce design companies to help the paper-cut crafters to produce new and cool products, like post cards book covers.
  • Negotiate with the local government and try to convince them to start a program to protect the paper-cut heritage by using commercial approach.

UNIT 2

Headline: Save our history, design future city card.

Story:

Part 1:

Where are you come from? Which city? What history does your city have?

Want a cool stuff to introduce your city to your friends?

Yes, if you want, your city has a luxury from history, the paper-cut.

Part 2

But,

the problem is that the living history is fading.

  • There are only 4 aged paper-cut crafters getting old.
  • Young people are not willing to learn paper-cut - it can't make a living.
  • and what is worse, MOST people in the city even don't know they have paper-cut.

Yes, the paper-cut of Ezhou, the national intangable heritage is leaving from us.

What we can do?

  • Tell the stories of paper-cut, based on the research report, to the people in the city in SNS and local TV station.
  • Design the products, like post cards using paper-cut pattens, etc..
  • Communicate with the local government and seek for the posibility for the long-term support to protect the heritage, such as lauch a fund.

Part 3

Through this way, no matter you are clicking on your mouse to forward a tweet to save the paper-cut, or spend your pocket money to buy a paper-cut post card, or promoting the protection program in other ways,

YOU ARE SAVING YOUR OWN HISTORY!

YOU ARE MAKING YOURSELF PROUD OF YOUR CITY!

YOU ARE MAKING YOUR CITY COOL!

So, just do it!
