Pan's Labyrinth

Pan's Labyrinth, directed by Guillermo del Toro, is one of my favorite movies. A mixture of fantasy and drama, a fairy-tale world of a young girl's imagination (Olivia) is juxtaposed to her real world surroundings, whereby a ruthless military regime in Spain seeks to maintain power and control against rebel freedom fighters.

I wanted to emulate the movie by recreating the "Pale Man," a frightening and memorable character in the young girl's fairy-tale world. Visual interest aside, the Pale Man is a microcosm of the movie's gruesome, hideous, and violent nature that is experienced concurrently in the "real" world.

First, I wanted to start by creating a (relatively) monochromatic version of the pale man before building in additional depth and dimension, texture, and, of course, blood.

Next, incorporated the Pale Man illustration into a poster format. The red area will ultimately appear like a fireplace. I used a Live Trace for the lettering, taken directly from the existing poster / cover designs.
