Paint Lively and Colorful Doors with Ink and Watercolor

Hi Amy, I live in France and I take a lot of pictures of doors. Many are wooden ones and your demo is clear enough but what color mix should I use to render limestone or stone in general. When I try the result isn’t right, to my taste. Thanks in advance

It's a lot of back and forth, really, and your results may vary from mine! For yellowish stone, I use a mixture of yellow ochre, Naples yellow, and maybe a bit of transparent earth. But other painters use light washes of raw sienna, for instance. For grey stone I do like my Daniel Smith shadow violet, but if you don't have that, it's probably going to be a mixture of blues with earth colors like raw sienna, burnt sienna, transparent earth. The key is to have a lot of variety and not paint every stone the same! I also do lift color up with a paper towel or dry brush to get some variety, or let grey and yellow mix together on some stones (you see some of that on the far left.) Oh, and also on grey, I will add in some rose colors, like Quinacridone rose or alizarin crimson...just a tiny bit!
