Online Weight Loss Coaching Aimed at Small Peer Groups of People at Risk for Developing Type 2 Diabetes

Project Start - Session 1 Beginning of Class 1/7/2014

The Center for Disease Control estimates there are approximately 78 million people with a condition known as "prediabetes" in the United States.  Prediabetes is a condition that increases peoples' risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Studies have shown that is possible to prevent or delay Type 2 diabetes from developing in those people at risk by losing weight and doing moderate physical activity.

I want to develop an online program that leverages a web-based interactive curriculum, digital tracking tools, coaching (through email, phone and text message) and peer support (on the website) to encourage these people at risk to change their unhealthy behaviors.

Session 2 User Stories 1/8/2014

Users want to lose weight.

Users want to change behaviors that put them at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.

Users want to make healthy living choices.

1.  Be educated on the risk factors for Type 2 diabetes.

2.  Track their food habits and weight.

3.  Learn about healthy food choices.

4.  Practice healthy eating principles.

5.  Learn importance of physical activity.

6.  Start developing a daily exercise habit.

7.  Learn how to cope with obstacles and challenges.

8.  Build on what they learn over the course of the program.

9.  Learn strategies to maintain and/or continue weight loss.

10.  Set new goals for weight and fitness levels.

By matching the user's profile to a peer group and health coach, we would create on online support group of like-challenged individuals who would support each other throughout the program.
