One Square by Karishma

Hello!

A little bit about me:

I'm Karishma, a textile designer (specialising in Digital Print) based in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

I am currently a student on the MFA Multidisciplinary Course at University of Ulster and a freelance designer and workshop facilitator.  I have previously completed internships with Vogue India and Topshop Design as well as worked in the costume and wardrobe department for HBO's Game of Thrones, on the Port and Docks Tapestry with ArtsEkta and created freelance print design for Smyth and Gibson Shirtmakers amongst others.  I have sold my print designs to Armani Exchange, Victoria's Secret and Bernard Chaus through a design agency and have scarf designs in the F.E McWilliams Gallery in Banbridge, Northern Ireland.

Some of my favourite designers are Issey Miyake (fashion), Fred Butler (accessories) and Anya Hindmarch (accessories/bags).

My passion lies in surface design; I create intricate patterns that fuse textile design and illustration.  I am attending this course to help realise my vision of a fashion accessories brand, the first collection of which is  a project called"One Square."

My project:

The idea for "One Square" evolved from a series of experiments to see what types of products could be created from a single square.  This led me to designing a series of shapes that could be translated into various products.

The shapes that were most successful worked well as bags, et voilà, the first collection was born!

I made the first prototypes from linen using printmaking and laser-cutting and etching...

..however, as heavier items were placed in the bags, they started to distort and so I went back to the drawing board and came up with more structured materials which are now working well and the first collection is coming together!

I am hoping that Seth's Skillshare session will take me one step closer to getting my first collection out there and my brand up and running!
