Oh Deer!

The Deer has always held a special place in my heart since seeing the movie "Bambi" at the oh so distant age of 4.

In the animal kingdom, their grace and beauty, are hard to surpass. So in-tuned to their surroundings, they become their surrounding. And being both stealth and fleet of foot, is a skill I wish I possesed to avoid unwelcomed chores at work.

After being exposed to American Indian philosophy while living in Jackson Hole, WY the deer became a personal part of my story. A discussion with a shaman revealed the Deer as one of the spirit forces that guide my path through life.

Since then, I'm much more aware of those moments Deer stroll across my path.

Just this weekend, after spending an afternoon drawing for this project, 6 deer showed up on the edge of the property were I was attending a Graduation Party. My own personal interpretation of their pressence was as a confirmation I had put a day of drawing to good use.

I started this project with research:

Reaquainting myself with literature of the Deer as spirit guide.

Then I looked up quotes, referencing Deer. One of may favorite from the "Saturday Night Live" character Jack Handy: "When I found the skull in the woods, the first thing I did was call the police. But then I got curious about it. I picked it up and started wondering who this person was, and why he had deer horns."

And then I thought about the common phrase, "Oh, Dear". Wondered about how we use the phrase and how it might translate, if the phrase was "Oh, Deer".

Next I went to collect some source imagery.

The first skeches I did were for the Drop Cap.

Then I went on to explore how to illustrate "Oh, Deer".

I rather like both of these sketches and will probably develop them in the future.

The spidar messing with the deer by weaving a web that read, "oh deer", makes me laugh. The deer is powerless to stop the spidar from having his fun. Then the guy with antlers sprouting from his head, would probably elicit an "Oh, Deer Me!" response from an onlooker. And that makes me keep laughing.

And then I wanted to take my Deer sketches and go play.
