Odd Bodies Workout - student project

Really wanted to push myself with more stylised illustration, because I tend towards a more painterly, realistic style in my own work but find myself really intrigued by illustrators who manage to convey really cool ideas with a really minimal amount of line/colour. I also wanted to push myself and finally do a workshop on here because I always end up just forgetting about it!

For my action pose I decided to draw a snowboarder because I'm a snowboarder myself so I'm naturally really interested in their form and how dynamic they are.

I'm not sure if I really pushed his form enough and it kinda still reminds me a wee bit of my usual style, although I did this entirely by 'flattening' whereas usually when I'm drawing I'll try and make things look a wee bit more 3D. I liked how he turned out though! Next drawing from memory...

The first one was a big ouch in my opinion but I actually really like how the second one came out, I think it's a perfect example of how drawing from memory simplified and improved the original drawing! I think his shapes are so much more interesting!

I had so much fun drawing these breakdancers and when I have more time I totally want to play around with them a bit more, or draw some more of them and really put more time into it and make it a cool group illustration. Looking back on these, I still don't think I pushed form and exaggerated as much as was suggested on the lesson and it's definitely something I could maybe work towards in the future if I come back to this.

Next up is the shapes exercise... which I really didn't like... it felt so unintuitive to how I usually work and I felt very limited and forced into a style I didn't much like... I think I should practice stuff like this more often though so that I can play around and find how it works in my style...

I drew these two guys first but the ballerina guy looked way too uncanny... I hate both of these designs haha but I guess you live and learn!!

I took this whole class as a really quick exercise but I learned so much and really enjoyed it so I definitely want to go back and spend more time on it! For my final illustration I decided to pick the snowboarder from my memory exercise again. I randomised a colour palette and got to work...

This class was the first time I've ever tried to use the pen tool and paths in Photoshop... it's generally something I would use Illustrator for. I STRUGGLED A LOT!! Even now when I tried to use the work path and mask it to an actual layer it would never actually work? I was clearly doing something wrong but I have no idea what! In the end I ended up turning each path into a selection and just filling in colour that way.

Although my final illustration is something I never would make normally, I find him pretty endearing and I definitely surprised myself. I would love to actually sit down and think about my final illustration, do the other exercises in this awesome class and put some more love and soul into my designs but for now I had a good time pushing myself and coming up with new things!
