Me, Why I'm taking the class, What I hope to Learn.
Let me start by saying, this is always favourite part of any exercise, brainstorming and letting images, words and ideas flood my mind. The primary reason why I am taking this SkillShare class is because I recognize my inability to produce the images in my mind digitally as I don't yet have those technical skills ( drawing, illustration, complete understanding of the functions of digital software). As you result, you'll see that my brainstorming is a mismatch of mostly words, with a few weak sketches.
Onto the project!
As someone whose wardrobe consists mostly of black, and whose work tends to be sombre, I was drawn to the concept of "Loud".
The first thought that came to mind was when I woke up in the middle of the night a couple of nights ago bcause it had started to hail, and the sound had rocked me out of my sleep.
My brainstorm then came to the idea that SOMETHING "loud" is simply ANYTHING that disturbs any of the 5 senses ( touch, smell, sound, sight, taste). As you can see from my sketchbook, I jotted down anything "loud" that related to that sense. For example, I'm trypophobic... afraidof small clusters of round shapes/holes, so to me, the back side of a fern is LOUD: it makes my skin crawl, my body scream, " RUN AWAY."
However, the image and word that most stuck out for me is "OBNOXIOUS": color (neons), patterns ( giant polka dots, animal prints etc.), and people.
So the image that I'm interested in digitally illustrating, is sketched in the bottom right hand corner: a brightly colored patterned BUS, with a big-mouth woman with BIG hair, talking so everyone else can hear.
After seeing some of the other projects, it looks like I'm not the only one who takes public transit often. There are some great illustrations of public transit environments, so I'm going go go back to the sketchbook and try to come up with something different.
This quick sketch came after watching children play in the park. It's amazing how there is chaos around them ( other children running, shouting, screaming, playing, kids clibing everywhere, sand being thrown... and yet there's always a few children, in the middle of it all, caught up in their own imagination, playing with a toy or two.
So here's the image of a child playing with a truck. I think I have the opportunit to play with vibrant, LOUD colors, and drawings around him as well, but at the moment, here is a quiet little boy lost in his own world.
