NedMap - Downtown Mountain Map

Why am I making this map?

NedMap is a map I’m making for my town’s Visitor Center.

Why am I the expert to create this map?

I’m no map-making expert, but I LOVE maps, which was why I got involved in the project. I also think my town deserves a new town map, and it’s super cool to be involved in local projects.

Who is my target audience?

The audience is town visitors and residents are looking for something to do or something tasty to eat.

What level of detail do I need to include?

I’ve been tasked with including street names, downtown businesses and other important points of interest. It also has to include some businesses that are not in the same town at all! So maybe this will be two maps combined into one? We'll have to see what happens...

Ideally, it'll also include walking trails, parks and connecting pedestrian routes. I want it to be simple, readable but also show a bit of town character, and outdoorsy quirkiness.

Do I want my final project to be printed or digital?

Printed! Although I’d like it to look lovely digital too, of course. The main version will probably be 8.5 x 14, so the town can print them at a reasonably low-cost.

“Dear classmates, I need your help/expertise/
guidance on how to.....”

There’s a whole lot of info going on to this map, so it could get confusing really quickly.  I'm really looking forward to getting some inspiration on how to present beautiful looking map symbols, legends etc.

 Inspiration Time

Here's the link to my Pinterest board- Get Out Your Maps!

I never knew there could be so many ways of creating maps; Illustrated, digital, hand-drawn, cut from paper, etched in wood, stitched, knitted, real, imagined, upside-down, topsy-turvy and technical! However they come - I love 'em all!

Hand-Drawn Map

To get going, I sketched my area in the Peak to Peak region. I got to know some of these canyon roads alot better during this September, when massive flooding closed off many roads out of the mountains.

I scanned it into Photoshop to add the names and give it some texture.

The Brainstorm

I'm a believer in thumbnail scribbles, doodles and general brainstorming...

Then, it's time to start churning out some drafts...
