Nature in the city

Having recently moved to NYC from London, I've sought out a little pockets of sanctuary within the city... This included a visit to Brooklyn Botanic's beautiful Japanese garden, where the Koi were friendly and blossom in bloom! It was a beautiful day so colours 'leapt out' and I thought I'd try to capture this memory in my Illustrator piece. Annotated sketch is a bit grainy but hopefully it shows what I'm trying to achieve...

Also, having used Illustrator for a good few years, this project is a great way to employ a new process from scratch and brush up on more effective use of tools (old and new).

As someone who typically sketches, scans and draws vectors over images - I like the idea of using my image just as reference. I hope to develop a looser style of vector illustration and keep it more organic. Plus my scanner is out of action - hence the grainy camera photo I've uploaded!

Feedback and thoughts appreciated :D

My inspiration moodboard - mixture of own/found photos. Nice swirly water vector and some Kuler swatch palettes...

Early stages, blocking out main shapes. Tinkering with the 'draw inside' mode... I think I need to revisit those tutorial videos again! :D

Working on detail - refined illustration, added tone & shading. Really enjoy using the draw inside function! I'm happy I can see plenty of progress from the blocked out stage... Looking forward to getting stuck into finer detail :D
