My story

Hi there.  I am participating in this workshop because I need to do some self-promotion.  And, even though I've been a writer for years, I have a very difficult time writing about myself.  I am a successful freelance copywriter for the financial services industry and have been asked to deliver a flyer or promotional piece that explains what I can do.  I thought this would be a good place to start.  

My story will be "the story of results."

Every day in my work, I strive to make an impact in the world.  My impact may seem small, but I believe it is still substantial. Everyone needs to feel financially secure, especially as they head toward retirement.  One of things you can do to help ensure a comfortable and secure retirement is to plan ahead and design a financial strategy, using a variety of financial products such as annuities, life insurance and a retirement plan like a 401(k) or IRA.  I don't design the products that can help people.  I write about them.  I write articles, brochures, emails, web content, presentations and other marketing material, taking often technical and complex concepts and crafting them into simple, understandable and accessible content that the average person can understand and use. I strive to help people understand the importance of planning for the future and motivate them to take action.  

My story components

I am pretty certain I like the first four components, in this order: Once upon a time, Conflict, New possibilities, Happily ever after.  But then I also like the fifth component: A world view.  I'm just not sure if it fits in the story and where it would go.  Possibly at the end?  Not sure.

My story's archetype

I selected the Rebirth archetype for my story because it was the only one that seemed to fit.  I have been a writer in the financial services industry for nearly 25 years, but have spent most of that as a direct employee of an insurance company.  About a year and a half ago, the company I worked for decided to move my department and not allow people (like me) to work from home.  So I started my own writing business.

Are you responsible for producing marketing material or internal communications for a financial services company?  Are your writers overworked, or are you tired of sending your writing projects to an agency that doesn’t understand your product, audience or market?   

Writing for insurance and financial services is a delicate balance between selling and compliance.  You need a writer who understands what you’re selling, who you’re selling to and what they want, as well as the parameters you need to work within -- a writer with the experience to produce clear, easy-to-understand content that speaks directly to your audience in simple terms, without jargon or complexity. 

For nearly 25 years, I’ve written clear, concise and effective marketing and communications content for financial services companies.  In 2014, I left my corporate job to start my own writing company, knowing that it was difficult for marketing departments to find good copywriting in this industry. Today, I am a successful copywriter with insurance and financial clients who depend on me to research, write and edit a wide variety of marketing content and internal communications.  They know I’ll make every initiative easier, because with little direction, I deliver messaging that is on time and on target.
