My soon to be niche!

Hi Melanie,

Thanks for this class! I've known for awhile now that I really need to determine what my niche is and focus on that, but have steered away from it because of how hard I know it will be. I'm hoping that taking this class will give me the motivation I need! I like a lot of different things, and my challenge is figuring out if it's possible to come what I do well (and also enjoy) with what I get giddy about. I havent come across many creatives who find a nice balance between two different niches (in my case, simple illustrations and lettering). Any advice?

Here's my questionnaire:

What am I ridiculously good at?

I think I have a good eye for simple but eye-catching design (is that redundant? :)). My drawing skills are not super strong but I think (hope!) I make up for that in my layout and overall style by using minimal but bold color.

What creative work makes me giddy with excitement?

Lettering, character illustration and bringing everyday objects to life - in the form of illustration :)

I love:

  • Working with clients and seeing how excited they are when there ideas are brought to life!
  • Using color and small details to make a big difference

Don't love:

  • Having to make things too exact
  • Clients who don't know what they want
  • Printing and more technical aspects of design

My dream clients are:

  • Creative event teams - making event posters or invitations
  • Publishers - magazines, children's books

I love to do creative work digital platform (though I'm trying to branch out to using paper and pencils :)

One thing I must learn to improve my niche creative skill is to draw better!
