My little island "Meulestee"

My little island "Meulestee" - student project

Why am I making this map? For fun? A client? A gift? To showcase my favorite places? Etc.

I want to make a map of my neighbourhood "Meulestee" (that means "City of mills" - although I haven't seen any mill yet :-) It's part of the former harbor area of Ghent (Belgium) and there's always a great atmosphere because of all kinds of people living together: retired sailors with tatoos, artists, musicians, immigrants, etc. We have two bridges and two canals with one main road in between. So I call it "my little island". Sometimes it's really hard to get on (or off) because of the traffic, or because one of the bridges is broken, so I want to make a map that shows people how to get to my island in an alternative way …

  • Why am I the expert to create this map?Who is my target audience?
  • Do I want my final project to be printed or digital? How is going to be used/held? What other constraints do I need to keep in mind moving forward? (Note type can be smaller on printed maps than when viewed on web)
  • What level of detail do I need to include? (Names, addresses, contact info, street names, website, hours, descriptions, color coding, etc.)
  • Dear class, I need your help/expertise/guidance on how to.....

My first map of my neighbourhood

I once made a hand drawn map for our housewarming party. It shows a walking trail, but I didn't know much about our neighbourhood back then, so there are not really a lot of secrets to discover on this map :-) I also made some address cards in case our friends and family got lost ...
