UNIT 1: Brainstorming, Inspiration and Sketching
Why am I making this map?
I write a travel and culture blog which focuses on museums, called Museum Diary. So far I have written about museums in 16 different countries, but I don't have a single map on my site! Eventually I want to include a big interactive map with hyperlinks to all the museums and countries featured on my blog, but for this class I'm thinking of making a map (or maps) to illiustrate a series of museum city guides I am planning for the summer, which will introduce my Top 5 Museums for a selection of cities I have visited.
Why am I the expert to create this map?
As well as writing my blog, I am also a museologist and work in museums. I often get asked for recommendations for what museums people should visit in a particular city I'm familiar with. This is what gave me the idea to write a couple of short museum city guides.
Who is my target audience?
The target audience are the readers of my blog and anyone who asks me for museum recommendations (who I usually then refer to my blog!).
What level of detail do I need to include?
The blog posts themselves will include links to the individual museum websites, with all the detailed information about opening times, admission fees, public transport etc. So I'm thinking of the map(s) more as an illustrative piece to whet people's appetite and to show how the museums in the individual cities relate to each other.
Do I want my final project to be printed or digital?
I'll be wanting the final map(s) to be included in my blog posts, so they would need to be digital or digitised.
After finalising the editorial calender for my blog over the summer, I now know I'll have 8 city guides but I'm going to focus on just one of them first for the map and have chosen Edinburgh as it's my favourite city in the whole world and I know it really well. The other day I had to take a fairly long train ride and started sketching out some initial ideas (see above).
As I'm currently on holiday and improvising a bit, I kind of combined the "imaginary city" exercise (option C - trace a map) with the optional "plot + share" exercise by taking a screen shot of the Apple map on my iPad and then tracing that in my Sketchbook app. I chose the map section of Edinburgh where all the museums are I want to include in my final map, plotted them (with stars) then traced the route between them.
I've fallen a bit behind on the exercises, because life's just been too busy, but I managed to get my final hand drawn map done in time to include it in my Museum City Guide for Edinburgh on my blog yesterday. Here's the map:
The map is part of the blog post and the numbers correspond to that. Here's the link to the post:
