Moon Moth Girl

Moon Moth Girl - student project

I made a commitment (just like Gabrielle did) to draw everyday and since starting this course- that's exactly what I've done.

I've spend at least 2 hrs a day watching videos, doodling, drawing and sketching. I then took Gabrielle's other course to help me brainstorm character idea's. After a few days of searching, I decided I wanted to include a moon somewhere and moths.

As you can see, my first sketch had a front facing girl, which was nice, but I wanted to challenge myself a bit more and create a different angle. I spent ages trying to get the balance right (something that I need to work on a lot more)

As I drew more, I felt I needed to investigate some shading techniques. I looked on Youtube and found some helpful videos for on how light effects a models head at different angles (this was challenging) I clearly haven't nailed it, but that doesn't matter, what matters is that I am trying.

I have always loved nature and the moon, so I wanted to include some pretty meadow flowers and grasses, this cleverly disguised the arm and hands, as I'm no where near ready to take on that yet! I then studied some photos of moths and added them in too.

I ended up using a Uni Ball Signo pen to complete my picture, I wasn't sure if that was the best thing to do, but once I committed I just had to keep going.

Note: I didn't actually have any of the materials that Gabrielle suggested, I literally had to steal my children's pencils to do this!

My finished image is here. I'm pleased with the result as a first try, but now I'm hooked and want to really challenge myself to create more characters.

Gabrielle's course has come at just the right time in my life; it's actually helped me in a lot of ways as I'm able to focus on something meaningful and soul nourishing, even though I'm in the midst of trying to find a home for me and my family- which is a wee bit stressful.

A few take away's from this course:
Don't compare yourself to others, don't get too precious about the things you've created. I took a methodical and logical approach to this course, I focused on the outcome and proceeded through the steps. Trust that you WILL improve if you just commit yourself.
