Mood board: Water Lilies and Ducks

Another color:

updated with lighter ducks

It would be fun if the gold was foil! I added some white dots as well.

Design phase:

Here's my square so far. Not sure if I want to keep the colors- kind of muddy. I have an unfortunate preference for swamp-y greens. I really wanted to put a texture in the background but I had some trouble making it look seamless. Something to work on.

Maybe a wrapping paper? I was trying to get a nice flow.

and as a circle for fun

Drawing phase:

I spent a few days drawing ducks, water lilies, and lily pads. Now that I'm tracing them, I realize that I'm not really getting the look that I had been hoping for. I think I need to either make them a little more cartoony and stylized or hand paint them to get the sketchy little bodies I'm looking for. Does anyone else have this problem with digital drawings? Perhaps I've been looking at too many water colors lately? This feels so flat and messy! I'd appreciate any advice. Here's a rough picture of some of the drawings in progress...

update- I think I solved part of my problem...maybe I need to make and use some new brush strokes

Mood Board:

I love the way ducks are both beautiful and really funny at the same time. If I can pull this off, I'd like my pattern to leave the same sort impression. Perhaps at first glance the viewer will be drawn to the pink lilies floating on water but upon further inspection may notice some cute and comical elements too. I think I'll have to play with scale a bit to get the effect I'm looking for.
