Modern Florals for Contemporary Spaces

PATTERN DESIGN CHALLENGE :)

As I'm taking part in the Pattern Design Challenge this June, I'm going to start a new pattern with a new moodboard.  The original pattern below was one of the very first repeat patterns I designed in Illustrator & I'm fairly happy with it, but it could certainly be improved on.

My new theme is Modern Florals for Contemporary Spaces.  The gardens and verges are filled with flowers now here in Scotland, so I'm surrounded by inspiration!

I've done some rough drawings from a few photos I took this week while out walking, I was particularly taken with some lovely orange flowers with squared off petals so I've focussed on those.  I want to make a pattern with a strong simple motif with not too much going on in the background.

Original Pattern (from October 2014):

My main inspiration was Autumn and all the leaves and seedheads which have fallen from the trees and are all over the pavements at the moment, I love it, it looks amazing.

I did a very quick moodboard which was all about botanics, scandi style and mid-century modern, to use as a starting point.  I sketched a little from this and a lot from my library of photos of nature.  Then using the great Inkpad app aswell as drawing straight into illustrator using my wacom, I digitised the sketches I liked.

The first design I came up with was a little too busy, some of the motifs were just getting in the way.  I was happy with the colours though which I got from my own colour palettes in Adobe Colour.

So I simplified it a bit, took out some of the motifs and used less colours:

Happier with that, I went on and designed some complimentary patterns and a different colourway:

This was so much fun! I've already designed some more different patterns.  Thanks Elizabeth for putting together such a great class and making it so clear and simple to understand.
