Minion Cover Reimagining

For this project, I decided to redesign the cover of the first book in my favorite book series. The book is called Minion by L.A. Banks, who passed away in 2011. I'm a huge fan of Sci-Fi so it was only natural for me to chose a book from that genre. I'm also a part of the "less is more" group of designers. I find that often times Sci-Fi and Fantasy novels have a lot going on, on their covers which turns me off.

Here is the original cover design:

I began this project by creating a Book Cover Inspiration Pinterest Board. I tend to create boards at the beginning of all of my design projects.

Next, I re-read some of the novel and began writing out things that jumped out at me that I could use for the cover as well as some themes. The Sankofa, which is tattooed on the base of the main character's spine, is a huge part of the novel. It is how she was found when she was put in the foster system. It means "We must go back and reclaim our past so we can move forward; so we understand why and how we came to be who we are today."

I knew fairly early on that, that is what I really wanted to use for the cover and this style I was going with could be used for the whole series, which I planned to eventually do.

Here is the result (I ended up designing a full jacket. The praises would go on the empty purple flap):

Let me know what you guys think. I would love to hear any ideas for improvement.
