Midnight Dance

Hi everyone! I am really excited to create my first pattern collection. I have already learned so many new things and can’t wait to see where this takes me. For this project I wanted to find something that I could really draw inspiration from. I also wanted to try something new and find a theme that would really challenge me. That’s when I decided to go for an Art Deco theme.

There is something about the feel of Art Deco that excites me. I really love how geometrically the shapes come together to create such an artistic look. Not only is it exciting to look at, but to create as well! There is no wrong way to make these shapes into pattern pieces. It’s so easy to have fun with!

To start things off I have created a mood board to spark the creative ideas.

Next up are a few sketches! I decided to draw these out using a fine tip, black ink pen. It was my first time drawing in straight ink, which I actually enjoyed. It allowed me to just draw what was on my mind and not spend all of my time worrying about changing, erasing, or perfecting things. Because my art deco theme is so geometric, most of my sketches are not complete and only half way designed. My thinking behind this was to just draw one side and then reflect the image once I had recreated it in illustrator.

It took me awhile to find a color pallet I was happy with, but recolor after recolor I finally settled on this one.

And that concludes my first pattern collection! I had a lot of fun with this one, but I will say I encountered a few bumps along the way. For some reason when I post it onto skillshare the images are not as sharp as they are when viewed in illustrator. It may just be my computer screen. Over all this process was a great experience and I can't wait to create my next collection. I would love your thoughts on this project so that I can grow even more with the next one!
