Maui's Dolphin logo mark

Hi creative people!

I chose this particular animal for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is endemic to my home country of New Zealand and secondly because it is critically endangered.
Maui's Dolphin also known by it's Maori name, Popoto (Cephalorhynchus hectori maui), is a subspecies of the Hector's dolphin and is the world's rarest and smallest known dolphin. In 2012 there were an estimated 55 adult Maui's dolphins remaining and now in 2015 the estimate is between 43 - 47.
They are recognised by their black markings and rounded dorsal fin.

After searching through a bunch of reference images I felt this one had the best pose.
Unfortunately, I didn't have any tracing paper on me so I did the majority of my preliminary sketches in Adobe Draw. Not quite as precise as pencil and paper but it did make me spend less time trying to perfect each sketch and just focus on creating multiple ideas and variations.

After going through the preliminary sketch stage, I chose a couple of them to develop further.
From these I created 4 variations and chose to follow through with the top right one as shown below.

Here is the vectored version of Maui's Dolphin - you can see that at this stage I still have an eye which I later removed to further simplify it.

I then tried following the gridding process for the first time. It was difficult initially and I definitely didn't get it 100% right, however I still notice a difference between the two.

Here's the final version of what I came up with. I'm really intrigued by the gridding process and I think I'll be following that system a lot more in future. There were a couple of the final sketches that I would like to take through the same process and see what I come up with.

Thanks for following my project and feel free to leave any feedback!
