Map Projects 1 & 2: London Tracing and the time I walked across the Danube from Hungary to Slovakia for a beer!!

Map Assignment 2;

Using Google Maps and Photoshop I traced a portion of London.

Map Assignment 1:

Maps have always told me a story. I just unfold them and they begin their tale. It doesn’t matter if they are old and worn and beginning to tear at the folds, a globe in my third grade class room, my umbrella with the map of the world from 1989 before the wall fell, a spiraled bound road atlas (any year will do) or a Google map on an iPad. There is a story there waiting to be discovered. So my maps will also tell a story.

My hand drawn map story took place in October of 2007. On a day trip out of Budapest, Hungary to Eszetgrom my husband spied a bridge that crossed the Danube into Slovakia. Always eager to add another stamp to our passport we decided to be spontaneous and go check out another country.

The map I have hand-drawn shows the route we took from Eszetgrom Cathedral, through Slovakian border control (where the guards were dressed in 1980s era Soviet uniforms and kept our passports for a good ten minutes) into the tiny town of Sturovo, Slovakia. There we withdrew the lowest denomination of money from the ATM (seems like it was 1 million koruna) looked for postcards, souvenirs and had a beer at The Corner Pub right next to the border crossing.

Crossing the bridge into Slovakia.

Border crossing where the Slovakia guards kept our passport for over 10 minutes. Yikes!

The view of Hungary walking back from The Corner Pub in Slovakia.

Why am I making this map? For fun? A client? A gift? To showcase my favorite places? Etc.

            I am making this map for:

  • Fun
  • To tell a travel story
  • To show a particular place
  • Hopefully to help influence people to travel

Why am I the expert to create this map?

            I am the expert to create this map because:

  • It is my story to tell
  • I actually walked this route

Who is my target audience?

  • Anyone who likes to travel
  • Anyone who is curious about this particular place

Do I want my final project to be printed or digital? How is going to be used/held? What other constraints do I need to keep in mind moving forward? (Note type can be smaller on printed maps than when viewed on web)

            I would like my final project to be both digital and printed. I would like to make serious amounts of map creations. I could use them myself when I travel and then recommend them to people via an e-book.

What level of detail do I need to include? (Names, addresses, contact info, street names, website, hours, descriptions, color coding, etc.)

  • I would like to be very detailed: turn here for this; stop here for this; look to your left etc;
  • If the walk includes cafes, shops, museums, attractions etc I would include the contact info

Dear class, I need your help/expertise/guidance on how to.....

Get the picture that is in my mind onto paper and/or software programming. I can think it, but I can’t literally create it with my two hands. =(
