Okay, so I've changed my mind 10 times on which map felt like the most interesting & fun, but also near & dear to my heart. I need to be 100% excited about the idea, & kept bouncing between my 2 years living in Philly, or my dream trip to Lisbon, Portugal; when, I later realized I NEVER created any sort of photo album, scrapbook, keepsake, etc. of my little study abroad trip to Europe in college 6 years ago. What a crazy, "unlike me" thing to do! I suddenly felt relief, as I (finally) knew what I was going to draw. It was almost worthy to be a true National Lampoon's European Vacation!
So, my map will be of my memorable & life changing trip to Europe, illustrating my favorite memories, & challenging myself to think outside of the box a little bit, but taking advantage of realistically drawing such beautiful landmarks, as well!
Here are some questions answered :) :
Why am I making this map?
Since I illustrate Custom Vacation Maps for others through my Etsy shop, I've never taken the time to create one special for ME. So, as noted above, I've never formally created anything memorable of my trip to Europe in college! I'm making this map for fun, & as a keepsake for me to hang in my apartment & keep forever!
Why am I the expert to create this map?
I suppose because I think of this trip on a daily basis, 6 years later; therefore, nobody knows this trip more than me (other than the 3 friends who traveled with me, of course!), remembers every road traveled, every spot visited, etc.! & drawing may just be my number 1 favorite art medium.
Who is my target audience?
All travelers & those who appreciate memorable experiences, & who love & appreciate art/illustrations:)
Do I want my final project to be printed or digital? How is going to be used/held? What other constraints do I need to keep in mind moving forward? (Note type can be smaller on printed maps than when viewed on web)
I want this to be printed, & I will use it in a variety of ways (to mainly live in a frame on my wall, & also serve as an example of my custom map illustrations on my Etsy shop). I need to keep in mind what sort of paper I'll want to use when printing, & am contemplating printing on a larger format--perhaps 18x24?
What level of detail do I need to include? (Names, addresses, contact info, street names, website, hours, descriptions, color coding, etc.)
I'm a very detail-oriented person & illustrator--I love getting lost in drawing every detail to something, so I want to have a mix of a lot of detail in the landmarks, favorite spots, etc., with implied drawings of the roads, names, etc. so it isn't too overpowering, & I can also challenge myself to think outside the box & staying away from too many details!
Dear class, I need your help/expertise/guidance on how to.....
be more abstract & carefree with my layout & drawings!
Here are some map sketches I created using paint (not a comfortable medium). I wanted to try something different to get a feel for the style I was going for. So I kept it rough/simple of each country I'll be drawing for my Europe trip map!
