Love like birds

Hi all,

I'm Vicky Lommatzsch, a writer and illustrator living in Ghent, Belgium.

Autumn is kicking in and it’s kicking in hard. Blankets, hot tea and an extra pair of socks are becoming my best friends again. In short, the ideal time of year to snuggle up on the couch and follow some of those workshops you’ve been putting off for too long. So that’s what I did yesterday evening, next to the man who watched soccer all night.

As you might or might not know, I’m a passionate doodler. Always doodling my way through phone calls, meetings or boring moments in waiting rooms. So I thought: what if I turn those doodles into something useful, like patterns to put onto phone cases, pillows, bedding and so on. (I’m trying to make a living out of this, remember?)

Unfortunately I didn’t know the first thing about pattern design. It’s a whole world on its own, so it seems. So I started looking around and found an intensive crash course by the fabulous Elizabeth Olwen, the fairy of surface design and obsessed with patterns.

It was a bit hard at first, but praise the lord I already knew my way (at least a bit) around Illustrator and Photoshop. And now I’m more than proud to say I created my first seamlessly repeating pattern. I sure love it and I hope you do too. I’ll be patterning (is that even a word?) through autumn and hope to have some cool new products in my Etsy shop soon.
