"Loud" Sketches (updated!)

"Loud" Sketches (updated!) - student project

I finally added texture using a range of Photoshop brushes. I am very happy with how this came out, and I learned so much in the process of making this. I hope this looks better now! It would be awesome, if you gave me some feedback! How is the form? Do the colors work well? Does the text work well?

Without Textures:

I decided to change the drum head because my in my last illustration, it didn't look like the drum fit onto the back very well. I also added the blue background, which It was hard to figure out what color to use. I wanted to stick to my original color palette, but having the man on a white background didn't work because his shirt wasn't showing.

The text was also something that I decided to add because I felt that the drum head felt empty. The font choice was hard to go through, but this is what I decided on. Let me know what you guys think!

Rough Draft on Illustrator:
So I made some changes to my original idea. I felt like my first drawings were not very balanced overall. I also had been looking at other artists/illustrators and tended to gravitate towards pieces that were more simplistic and flat. So I redrew my drawing and here is what I did in Illustrator!

Some problems:
After looking at this piece, I realized that his cream colored shirt doesn't show well with a white background. Also, I feel that the big drum needs to have some more detail, maybe I'll add some text. I used another illustration to get the colors and I think it balanced pretty well. Let me know what you guys think! Do the colors work? Is the composition interesting? Is it "loud"?

First Initial Sketches:

I'm sorry for the late upload, but I've been busy with school! I am currently an Art major at the University of Texas at Austin. I have always wanted to dive into illustration, but never knew how to create the right effects on Photoshop and Illustrator, so I am really excited about this class!

For the assignment, I decided to choose the word "loud". I started thinking about items that produce loud sounds, like the rest of you guys. I drew out some items and laid them out. Here is an sketch of some of the work I made:

I then started thinking about how to be able to make an illustrative story that depicts the word "loud". In Austin, we are known to have alot of street performers. There is a very famous one that performs as a one-man band, and it is always a treat to watch. I thought that this was best to depict the word "loud", so I decided to draw a one-man band. I also decided to add some text on the bass drum to describe the situation. I'm not really sure about the text and the font, so that's something I'm still trying to figure out:

I also thought about drawing a huge tuba with many contraptions that have whistes, bells and sirens. I thought of a lot of Dr. Seuss's drawings, and I wanted to some how allude to his sort of imaginative and whimsical illustrations:

Please give me back some feedback on what I should or should not do! I would greatly appreciate it!
