Long Island Map

Update December 6, 2016

Exercise Maps...First is a map from my house to my favorite Macaron place. Just to get a feel for drawing maps.

second is from my house to the office....its a very short commute to 10mins-15mins. Both maps I had trouble simplfying, but I do understand more now what requires to plan for the final map.

This is a screen shot of Long Island and helped me realize how to plan for the map.

each dot and color section represents an important person in my life. The red is the Lion- my best friend Nicole, the green-is The Mystic Nook, my home/apt,

the Mint color- The Grand Central Momo,- that is my mom's house (grandparents live there also/my office studio and where Momo, my dog Shiba Inu lives. My apt doesn't allow pets and my grandparents also basically stole him from me as well, they can't part with him,

The pink-The Enchanted Forest, my other best friend, Val/Valerie/Vixen, and final the blue-Engineers Headquarters (still trying to figure the right to name a household of Engineers), is where my in-laws live.

Why I picked those names for each place is because a long time ago my best friend Valerie got Foursquare now Swarm and we had fun naming our places, they stuck. I also like to give each person I meet an animal that could represent them, hence why my nickname for my other best friend is "The Lion". The colors are peoples favorite colors.

I know I will draw the shape of long island and then divide each section accordingly, concentrating on the places I named mostly. I think drawing the shape and being limited as how much I can put it in will help me edit and not get to crazy.I will put some landmarks and towns to give a sense of other areas but no outright addresses. I will definitely be putting a key and icon for each section so others can understand who each sections belongs to.

Below is my MoodBoard for inspiration and style for the map.

  • Hello I am Elizabeth Burger surface/textile designer.
  • Why am I making this map? For fun? A client? a
gift? To showcase my favorite places? Etc.

  • I am making this map for fun personal use. I want to create a map of the important places and people in my life, using my design and art skills.
  • Why am I the expert to create this map?

  • I am the expert to create this map because I know who and what is important to me and how I view them. :)
  • Who is my target audience?

  • Family & Friends, those who appreciate maps and those who can offer constructive criticism, would be much appreciated.
  • What level of detail do I need to include?

  • Key of Symbols of who each person is, patterns representing their area, color coding, towns and some streets.
  • Do I want my final project to be printed or digital?
How is it going to be used/ held? What other
constraints do I need to keep in mind moving

  • I definitely want to print my map, so need to be aware of type and overall symbols. Also my format will be 11x17 so need to keep an eye how i will fit everything and making sure its legible. The printed version will be handled infrequently, plan to put it in a frame. I will also want a digital version but I think that will be worried about last.
  • “Dear classmates, I need your help/expertise/
guidance on how to keep things organized, logical, simple but detailed. Also to let me know when the patterns have taken over the map too much. That's all folks, for now.
