Live by the Sun, Love by the Moon

I chose the phrase:

"Live by the Sun, Love by the Moon"

I've always loved this saying and the idea of opposites attracting/fitting together like yin & yang. Two polarities that could not exist without the other (sun & moon, life & love). I thought it would be fun to explore this through lettering and illustration.

Here is my mood board:

11/14 LETTERING WARMUP:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

11/16 THUMBNAIL SKETCHES: I'm really liking the top middle thumbnail but am wondering if it doesn't read as "Live by the sun, Love by the moon". I love the eye shape frame, the ying/yang sun and moon, and the day/night illustration surrounding the words.

11/16 REFINED SKETCHES: Spent almost all day on these!

This first sketch is definitely my favorite. I like that I am able to incorporate my illustration style and more detailed embellishment. This sketch definitely needs cleaning up, but I'm liking it as a start.

This next sketch is definitely rough. I'm thinking I could maybe add some sort of border around the circle of words. Also I think I'd continue drawing the stars around so they touched parts of the sun rays. I definitely want to figure out how to work more detail into this sketch if I decide to work it to final.

11/19 FINAL SKETCH: Here is my final sketch! I added some more detail above and below the banners. The symbols are the sun and moon zodiac signs (leo and cancer) along with more embellishment surrounding. I also added a border around the entire thing. It definitely needs to be cleaned up on the computer, but I'm pretty happy with where I'm at so far! Can't wait to start adding color!

Got started on mocking up the color in Photoshop. I was originally thinking I would paint this much like my other work, but we'll see where I take it in the next class (The Final Steps of Hand Lettering). Feedback appreciated!
