Lines & Letters

Update 6

June 18, 2014

It's been quite some time since I've posted anything here, but i figured it would be fun to share some of my more recent calligraphy attempts. So, now moved to the top of this section, I present my newest work:

Update 1

September 25, 2013

This is my first attempt at calligraphy and so far I'm having a blast!  I'm going to continue working on the basic lines and shapes until I feel like I really have a grasp on the strokes. I'm finding that if I hold the pen ever so slightly at the wrong angle, I lose the thick and thins. So that is something I want to improve on. Consistent spacing is also proving to be more difficult than I would have thought! But I'm just going to keep at it :-)

I've been working on the shapes and think I'm getting much better at my spacing. I'm also way more comfortable holding the pen, so that could be a big part of it. Next up, starting on some letterforms!

Update 2

September 26, 2013

Note to Self: You are a lefty. Do not drag your hand across your own writing!

I was doing so well (at least I thought so). Then I picked up my hand and saw a big smudge on the bottom of my H. Not to mention the ink on the back of my hand. It's something I need to be more aware of as I keep practicing.

I've also found that I seem to be better when I practice the letters in alphabetical order rather than repeating each over and over.  Has anyone else felt the same?

Update 3
September 30, 2013

I'm still working on my lowercase letters. At this point I've been practicing putting words together. This is what happens when you ask your husband for phrases to work on...

Update 4
October 2, 2013

For some reason I feel like I'm stuck on lowercase and haven't taken the next step to uppercase yet. So for the time being, I'm still having fun putting little phrases together. I'm hoping that I get comfortable enough to start addressing some envelopes and figured some name and street practice wouldn't hurt!

One thing I'm noticing is that I'm starting to get some globs on ink. Could I be over-inking or pushing too hard on the nib?

Update 5
September 26, 2013

I've been continuing to practice my lettering with some of my favorite quotes and phrases.  Here are a few snippets of my progress...
