Latte Art Throwdown

Brick & Mortar Coffee: Latte Art Throwdown

A Process Guide

_______________________________________________________________

“What is a latte art throwdown?- Everyone who isn't a coffee snob

latte art throwdown is a competition based on a set of aesthetic rules of an espresso shot with 8 oz of steamed milk, poured in a decorative pattern or design in a 1-vs-1 style tournament bracket until a victor is crowned.

1) EXPLORATION Most posters I've seen/made focus on the actual latte art in trying to make the event seem classy and organized. But after going and judging a few, it's usually just an excuse to drink coffee and beer for free while people try to make swans. It's pretty messy, and competitive, and I wanted my type and texture to reflect that--so I used a colored pencil for the exploring part.

2) MOTIF So at this point, I'm listening to a lot of 80's music and am a few beers deep so I want to take the type and design and make it look like it was just drawn with chalk over a screen print test sheet; but I couldn't quite put my finger on it :/ So I did 3 options...

  • Black paper BG with chalk appearance

  • White paper BG with ink or charcoal type and texture

  • Inked Bg with pastel colors and texture

3) VOTING Sadly I couldn't make an executive on this design since it was client work, but they luckily chose my favorite composition which was the 3rd option. The final composition was printed on a delicious 80ib matte cover stock.
