Keeping It Simple

Keeping It Simple - student project

I find that I always go into far too many details when I am creating, so for this project I wanted to take a step back from that and keep it as simple as possible whilst still trying to capture the essence of the subject.

I tried out some different tools (like the toothbrush) and found that I could make some blocky marks and a scratchy texture with it. I wanted to see how I could incorporate that into the piece.

When I originally drew this giraffe in pencil, I was very much captured by the eyes. Below is my original detailed drawing and the inspiration for this piece.

For the project, I sketched it quite loosely and then let the ink process take the reins. I also used a couple of wash and line techniques.

It was a fun process!
