Just to be alive is a grand thing

A while back, I read this quote by Agatha Christie that said "I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing". I love that, and I chose the last part of that for my project.

I was a bit worried that the quote wasn't concrete enough to spark ideas, but figured I would give it a shot. I started out brainstorming quite a bit around the person behind the quote, and looked at different Christie book covers, and was especially drawn to a kind of 20's, art deco style. I toyed with the idea of making a book cover - I like the juxtaposition of the life of the quote since Agatha Christie is mainly known for books about death. So I sketched up a few ideas for the word alive.

And made some thumbnails. The other idea that I was also playing with was different connotations of the word grand; fancypants stuff, like mansion gates.

Pretty early on, I got rather attached to the idea of the words grand and thing connecting by the first and last letters. But that and the 20's theme did not seem to fit together very well. I made a more sketched out version of the sort of 20's book cover, but it feels kind of bare without any embellishments, and I don't really know where to go with this one.

So I also tried out the mansion gates concept, and I think this is the one I will be sticking with.

This is where I am at now. I'll update later with my progress, and I'd appreciate any comments!

UPDATE: all inked out!
