Jolie Madame

November 4th, 2013

For this project, I decided to recreate an ad for "Jolie Madame" originally created by René Gruau, an Italian-born fashion illustrator (1909-2004). I was inspired by one of the other students artwork and discovered this amazing illustrator and work. I thought the simple yet elegant lines, brush texture, and open white space would be a good starting place for learning Illustrator.

This is the first time I'm using Adobe Illustrator CC. I do not have any previous experience using Adobe Photoshop or products. I will be using a Wacom Bamboo "Capture" tablet.

Original Publicité pour "Jolie Madame" by Rene Gruau (1952).

After watching Unit 1 & 2: I used the point tool to create the hands and bows. Then I used the brush tool (Wacom 6D set) to paint the black lines. This was a little tedious, but I found myself engrossed in the process...

I used the same technique to paint the yellow lines

I then experiemented with  the brush sets and used the Grunge set the most to fill in the mitten. I found this to be the most challenging part of the project. I experimented with different layers of colors until I felt that it was similar to the original texture. Here's what I have so far:

I've yet to watch Unit 3. I'm thinking of adding in some text to the background.

Let me know what you guys think so far and how I can improve!
