Jack McGuire v. Spoon River

STEP 1:

Selecting the Text:

I chose Jack McGuire because I wanted to play with the idea of memory, and who better to choose than a drunken man who commits murder.  I can empathize with the idea of forgetting those small but most important details that could mean all the difference, and in Jack's case his freedom.  I also had fun finding other characters from Spoon River's world.  The judge, attorney's, and witnesses are all mentions in the book.  It was fun imagining how their lives may have worked congruently with one another.

Text Chosen:

Jack McGuire

Favorite Excerpt:

And yet I was going peacefully home, Carrying my jug, a little drunk,

When Logan, the marshal, halted me

Called me a drunken hound and shook me And, when I cursed him for it, struck me

With that Prohibition loaded cane—

All this before I shot him.
