It's time to start living the life you've imagined.

"It's time to start living the life you've imagined" - Henry James

I chose this quotation as it really means a lot to me on a personal level at the moment, and I hope it'll serve as a reminder to conquer my fears for the future. I work as a graphic designer but hand drawn lettering is out of my comfort zone so I'm on a bit of a mission to explore and practise it now. My aim is to design the quotation for a wall print for my home but I think it could work as a textile print for a cushion or greetings cards.

I started off with the word association exercise. I quite liked the imagery of cogs and clockwork for "Time" which works quite nicely with invention for  "imagination" too. My research then started leading to a slight steampunk theme with its ornate, flamboyant lettering and mechanical imagery. But I want to keep the words of "Living" and "Life" as more organic and calligraphic as a contrast. I was particularly drawn to several vintage book covers of Jules Verne novels.

Trying out different letterforms...

Starting to work on ideas for a layout...

These are very rough at the moment but this (below) is the general layout I want to start working up, incorporating some imagery clockwork elements. The design will be constrained in a square but have  a few elements breaking out of the borders. I want the word "Imagination" to soar and sweep upwards. The words "Living and Life" will be linked together and more organic and calligraphic in style as a contrast to the other words.
