Is Earned Value Useful in Software Development Projects

Can earned value analysis be used in software development projects?

Well yes, but with some caveats.

The scope, schedule and cost need to be frozen on day one and any changes made during the product creation process needs to be identified and noted when reporting status. Because there will be an alarming impact on Earned Value with significant changes to the product backlog (in Scrum)

How useful are the calculated metrics.

Very useful in that the Product Owner/Sponsor/Customer will for sure want to know the impact on cost and schedule from changes to the scope or product backlog

Any further comments:

I will be interested to hear comments from students involved in software development projects on how project status is reported in their projects.

And watch out for another class in the series explaining exactly how earned value analysis works in a Agile/Scrum type project
