Inky Valentine: Vintage Romance

Inky Valentine: Vintage Romance

I've been playing around with sketching some vintage phones for this project. I really want to give this a fun, romantic, flirty feel with some hand lettering to make it feel that much more personal. My hubby and I are both a little techy, but in all of our years together, we've talked on the phone only a handful of times. Which makes drawing a vintage phone for a valentine that much more ironic.

A belly bug whipped through our home and I fell behind! Playing catch up now and would love any feedback on these initial mockups. #1 and #3 are my fav's so far.

hopefully it's just the way my monitor is calibrated, but this upload shifted the saturation of my colors quite a bit. I chose more of a salmon color for the reddish tone, but in this upload, it's appearing much more vibrant. Anyone else run into this?

Inking is done and I'm eager to work it into the illustration. One note... I didn't have a calligraphy pen with me in my home office, so I improvised with some micron pens and this incredibly fun and unique glass pen. Unlike a calligraphy pen, I can't change the nib, so my stroke options are limited in that sense. BUT, this thing holds a ridiculously large amount of ink and makes some interesting marks when it starts running dry.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

I just wrapped up learning some street art using a spray paint technique, timed out to a song during a Christmas show. I initially thought about sketching the tools of the trade for being athe mom of a 2 year old boy, but found the tools from my street art project to be more visually interesting.

• Spray Paint

•Palette Knife (subtractive method)

• newspaper (adding texture, subtractive)

• tape

• ear buds (so I could hear my cues)

I dove in with sketches and jumped into working digitally. Will begin playing with some ink today but would love any feedback in the meantime. Having a lot of fun with this so far. It's been good to work on a project that forces me to not overthink what I'm doing.

So the texture is still in progress. I'd like to add some highlighting on the spray paint can to give it a little more dimension, and I really want to add in a spray sort of texture coming from the can, perhaps even spraying to the right over the newspaper too. And I'm toying with a background color, other than white.
